Discovery

You came all the way
here: eyes fixed on the X
on the map. You lose yourself,
tiring arms letting the shovel bury
its face on the coarse soil, its grave
jaw crumbling gravel, hitting a big boulder –
knees bumping into a sharp edge,
ribs keeping and inhaling dirt,
soil sticking to skin, hands
hard in understanding
the discovery of
escape.
