Recitation

I drowned as a child
latching myself to concrete
nouns etched in chalk, choking
on the first word I uttered: Mother,
another: Why? As I trembled the same way
I tasted sand and felt the ocean fill my eyes,
the tears come & I wait for an explanation
when my cries for help become waves
crashing jagged rocks unfazed
and unapologetic. Memorize
my name when my bones
deposit into walls
of limestone.
